Author, B. J. Bowen, maestro of the musical mystery, has created a singularly unique and pitch-perfect cacophony of a ballabile brainteaser in Ballistics at the Ballet, the second installment in the Musical Murders cozy mystery series.

It’s the Christmas season and Emily Wilson, second flutist in the Munroe Symphony, is looking forward to another year of performing the Nutcracker. A creature of routine, she finds the rhythm of her life experiencing rubato; her tempo unavoidably altered by the death of the orchestra’s nasty and volatile conductor, Felix Underhayes.

She would like to sit this one out but is compelled to make an involuntary command performance as reluctant amateur sleuth when percussionist, Charlie McRae, Emily’s nephew, is accused of the murder. Emily’s mother and sister Kathleen, Charlie’s mother, join the ensemble but their efforts hit a few sour notes.

Emily must manage her performance schedule, family dynamics and conduct an investigation all while avoiding a unhinged murderer seeking to silence her forever.

I highly recommend this emotionally charged cosy mystery or what I refer to as a musical mystery masquerade.
