Can’t Stop the Funk is Author H. Max Hiller’s third book in the “Cadillac Holland Mystery Series”. The entertaining series of cozy-mysteries follows the adventures of protagonist, NOPD Detective Cadillac Holland’s enigmatic past as Special Operations operator and Intelligence Agency operative is obscured in secrecy and only hinted at occasionally. His home is an apartment above Strada Ammazarre, Italian for “Road Kill”; a French Quarter bistro he co-owns with Chef Tony Venzo, there’s a story there.
I won Can’t Stop the Funk for my participation in a Cosy Mystery Village Author Takeover. I found this book’s real world intrigue refreshingly unique.
Hiller describes community life in the Ninth Ward, the home of New Orleans’ poorest citizens before and after the devastation of hurricane Katrina. He then recounts the impending future of the city’s most troubled neighbourhood. Despite the fact that many of its residents are struggling with the rising economic tide in the wake of the monster storm there’s a new threat amidst the sinister turbulence of greed and politics.
Can’t Stop the Funk is a well researched and fascinating crime detective novel, with a unique story line, that will hold you in rapt concentration as you are swept up into a maelstrom of suspicion, avarice and backroom politics. You will be introduced to well drawn enigmatic characters where the only thing predictable is their unpredictability.
Although the book would benefit from a good proofread, Hiller is an imaginative story teller and will keep even the cleverest sleuths guessing.
