Author, B. J. Bowen, has created a Symphonic Cozy Mystery that will keep you guessing right to the end. She creates a mood of awkward annoyance in the first chapter as her protagonist, Emily Wilson, flutist, is subjected to a puerile rant by her obtuse friend, Olive Patterson, bassoonist, concerning the object of her unrequited ardour. Emily’s awkward annoyance is quickly transformed to apprehension and suspense as her situation is altered from bewildered bereavement to that of murder suspect by a visit from Lieutenant Gordon, homicide detective.
Emily, the Music is Murder, Diva, becomes the primo suspect in Olive’s murder and must prove her innocence with the able assistance of Divo, Barry Reitman, attorney and KC Giroux, escort. Bowen relentlessly intensifies the tempo from adagio to crescendo as poco-a-poco the symphonic mystery draws to a dramatic coda.
I must say that I am impressed with Ms. Bowen’s prowess as a wordsmith. She is definitely a maestro of the cozy mystery genre. Music is Murder would make a great gift for any cozy mystery connoisseur.
